PBS produced a remarkable special “The Mind of a Rampage Killer” which you can access at this link:

One of the most important lessons that we can teach our children is to report when they hear stories about the intention to kill; when their friends begin to behave in ways that become frightening to them. We must teach our children to think of their actions as courageous-not as snitching.

We hear about successful mass murders, but we don’t hear about the hundreds that are stopped because of courageous people who talk to their teachers, their parents.

PBS also produced a documentary about the role of science in predicting a mass murderer:

Much is being learned about mental illness, particularly serious mental illness that leads to the Adman Lanza’s of the world. Thankfully, they are few and far between.

These two shows open the doors to the families who have serious problems with their children and fear them. And the families share their angst and fears about the fact that they are not receiving the help they need.

If you have any concerns about your children and their behaviour watch these shows, read the transcripts. And if you fear the mentally ill, watch and read and learn not to be afraid of the vast majority of us with mental illness.
