There are new studies indicating that stroke can lead to depression. It seems to be the result of an "acute insult to the brain" which leads to psychiatric problems. This research is under the leadership of Dr. Nathan Hermann, head of the division of geriatric psychiatry and a scientist in the Brain Sciences Research Programme at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre.
