Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has stated unequivocally that Islam is compatible with the west. Or as he puts it “Islam is not incompatible with the West.”
Well, what does the Imam say about marriage?
Aly Hindy, serves as the imam at the Salaheddin mosque in the east end of Toronto. According to him, polygamy is acceptable despite the fact that it is against Canadian law. He insisted the law should be changed. He described it as a “garbage law,” and said “eventually we’re going to recognize that there’s not enough men for each woman.”
Hindy is quite comfortable with performing a second or third nikah (marriage) ceremony for $200.00. A second or third marriage is not registered with the government so in his eyes it is not illegal. “We have no problem with the government because we are not going to register. If you register, then it is illegal, because you are already married.”
He has no fear of the government or the laws regarding marriage in Canada. When asked about performing these marriages rather than being concerned about breaking Canadian law his response was “So? Sue me. Let them sue me. We follow the law because we’re not registering a second marriage,” he said.
This is not new for Hindy. The Toronto Star reported on his activities in 2008.
He said back then: “Polygamy is happening in Toronto; it’s not common, but it’s happening.” In the past five years, Hindy said he has officiated or “blessed” more than 30 polygamous marriages; the most recent was two months ago. Even some imams in the GTA have second wives, he added.
“This is in our religion and nobody can force us to do anything against our religion,” Hindy said. “If the laws of the country conflict with Islamic law, if one goes against the other, then I am going to follow Islamic law, simple as that.”
Keep in mind that Aly Hindy, of the Salaheddin mosque, is the same Imam who welcomed the Winter Conference that was held December 24, 2018 at the Salaheddin Islamic Centre where guest speakers are on record calling for the death of Jews.
According to the CBC, Hindy is not the only Imam condoning polygamy in Canada.
Perhaps the law needs to be tested in respect to the practice of polygamy among Canadian Muslims. Until then it appears, Mr. Prime Minister, Islam is not compatible with the West.
